Tell Congress: Support Human Rights in Guatemala

Join us in showing a strong support from the Jewish community for human rights and democracy in Guatemala.

In Guatemala, former President Jimmy Morales and his administration have dismantled checks and balances, weakened democratic institutions, shredded the rule of law and attacked human rights defenders. The new administration, under President Alejandro Giammattei, appears to be continuing this appalling pattern.

The U.S. government must take a stand to thwart these continuing abuses of power by the government of Guatemala. It’s time to call for a return to democracy and a rule of law that supports human rights.

To halt continuing efforts by the Government of Guatemala to perpetrate abuses of power, the U.S. Government must be a global leader in calling for a return to democracy and a rule of law that supports human rights.

AJWS has persistently urged Congress to cosponsor and pass the Guatemala Rule of Law Accountability Act (S.716/H.R. 1630), sponsored by Senator Cardin and Representative Torres, to address the ongoing situation in Guatemala and hold the country’s leaders accountable to its people.

I am a constituent concerned about human rights in Guatemala. I’m writing with the American Jewish World Service community to ask your office to co-sponsor the Guatemala Rule of Law Accountability Act.

As Americans, we are deeply connected to the daily human rights struggles of Guatemalans, who currently are working to protect the rule of law and fight corruption in their country. It is crucial to build U.S. support for their efforts. A key vehicle to achieve this goal is HR 1630, the Guatemala Rule of Law Accountability Act.

This bill would expand those designated under the sanction and visa denial aspects of the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability statute (Pub. L. 114-328, Subtitle F) to include current or former Guatemalan officials that have:

• Committed grand corruption, money laundering, narcotics trafficking, or financing political campaigns with the proceeds of narcotics trafficking
• Misused U.S. Government military equipment that was provided to combat trafficking and secure the border of Guatemala
• Participated in obstruction of justice within the Guatemalan judicial system and disobeyed rulings of the Guatemalan Constitutional Court
• Interfered with the work of any U.S. Government agency, or any institution receiving U.S. contributions, such as CICIG
