Call on Congress to Permanently Repeal the Global Gag Rule
We’ve partnered with international sexual and reproductive health and rights organizations, including Planned Parenthood, Amnesty International, NARAL, Population Connection and CHANGE to tell Congress that we want to overturn the global gag rule, and we want them to do it now. As they draft the federal appropriations bill, they have an opportunity to make this historic change that will benefit women, girls and LGBTQI+ people long into the future.
Though President Biden rescinded the global gag rule in his first week in office, we must act now so that future administrations cannot reinstate this harmful policy, which blocks U.S. global health assistance to any organizations that provide information, services, referrals or advocacy for legal abortion—even if they use their own funds for these services. The gag rule also impacts these clinics by halting vital health care like maternity care and HIV treatment and prevention, further putting lives in danger. Full repeal ensures that women and LGBTQI+ people have access to the care they deserve, regardless of who is in power in Washington.
Be among those who stand up for justice today. We need 1000 signatures to deliver our petition to Congressional leaders: Please add your name to show Congress that action is urgently needed and that now is the time to protect reproductive rights and lives around the world.
Dear Chairman Leahy, Ranking Member Shelby, Chairwoman DeLauro, and Ranking Member Granger,
As a supporter of American Jewish World Service and someone who is motivated by the deeply held belief that all people deserve access reproductive health care, I’m writing today to urge you to permanently repeal the harmful global gag rule in this year’s annual appropriations bill. This is a critical step toward ensuring that women, girls and LGBTQI+ people across the globe have access to reproductive health care, and that their rights and dignity are respected.
Women, girls and LGBTQI+ people in marginalized communities already face stigma and discrimination in their access to health care. The global gag rule puts them at greater risk of harm by cutting off access to crucial services including family planning and reproductive health, HIV treatment and prevention, and maternal care due to the closure of clinics or the disruption of services in their communities. While I am grateful that President Biden has already rescinded the previous administration’s expansion of the global gag rule, its effects continue in countries around the world and a future administration could reinstate this damaging policy.
Permanent repeal of the global gag rule is both urgent and possible, and we need your support. I am asking you to include its repeal in the final federal appropriations bill and ensure that this draconian policy is eliminated once and for all.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
