An HIV diagnosis should not be a death sentence for anyone, anywhere. In the last few decades, there has been powerful progress toward achieving this goal. One program, the U.S President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), has provided testing and treatment that has saved 25 million lives since it was created in 2003.

I’m writing today to urge you to pass a five-year reauthorization the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program that has saved 25 million lives since it was founded in 2003 and is overwhelming supported by the American people.

An HIV diagnosis should not be a death sentence. But without treatment and prevention programs, far too many people around the world will die. While people with HIV in the United States and other countries in the Global North have relatively easy access to testing and treatment, these services are virtually unavailable to those living in the Global South—without PEPFAR.

The success of the program has been astounding. In just 20 years, 5.5 million babies who would have otherwise been infected were born HIV-free; 64.7 million people were able to get tested for HIV; and 21.1 million men, women and children received lifesaving antiretroviral treatment.

That’s why I’m supporting American Jewish World Service (AJWS)’s call to reauthorize PEPFAR in the next budget and beyond. As an organization rooted in Jewish history and values, AJWS believes in the concept of b'tzelem Elohim—the idea that every person was created in the Divine image and is equally deserving of dignity and respect. This is a value that I also hold dear, and why I urge you to support PEPFAR. Without it, millions of people will suffer or die painful and preventable deaths.

I believe that we can live in a world where no one gets infected with HIV, where everyone living with HIV and AIDS has access to treatment, and where the stigma that surrounds the virus is a thing of the past. I am also strongly opposed to weaponizing faith to endanger lives, as some religious leaders and politicians have done in their opposition to PEPFAR. Please help save lives by supporting this program, both now and in the long-term. Thank you.
