Beginning with the Reagan administration, the Global Gag rule has banned foreign organizations that receive U.S. foreign assistance for family planning from providing, counseling on, or talking about abortion, even using their own money. Now, the Trump administration has taken Global Gag even further, expanding it and exporting their extremist agenda to erase LGBTQI+ people, shut down diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and cause deliberate harm. Global Gag now applies to more issues, funds, and recipients than ever before.
