Speak out against the U.S. assaults on global human rights

President Trump has cut off all U.S. foreign assistance and reinstated the global gag rule. Taken together, these actions upend an ecosystem of international development that has been a source of stability and strength for decades. By freezing foreign assistance, Trump is using an “America first” shield to reverse human rights progress that enriches freedom for millions. By returning to global gag, he is outlawing all foreign assistance to overseas organizations that provide abortions, even when organizations use their own funds and even if the procedure is legal in their countries. These actions will deny life-saving care, imperil the global humanitarian ecosystem, and put millions upon millions of people at risk. Please speak out: Email your elected officials in Washington and urge them to fight to reinstate U.S. foreign aid.

The Trump administration’s complete halt in U.S. foreign assistance is immoral, impractical and destabilizing. Beyond its humanitarian and diplomatic costs, this sudden freeze complicates the flow of aid from allies, donors and institutions—like the United Nations—to areas in need and impairs the U.S.’s ability to donate to global funding pools. Reinstating the global gag rule denies people in the most vulnerable circumstances the life-saving care they need, cutting of all U.S. funding to organizations that provide or counsel patients on abortion, even with their own funds and even in countries where abortion is legal.

Not only are these actions immoral and antithetical to American values, but they fail to achieve their stated aims. Rather than reduce abortions worldwide, the global gag rule increases the number of unintended pregnancies and abortions—particularly unsafe ones—while increasing maternal mortality rates. Halting all U.S. foreign assistance will not “make our country safer, stronger and more prosperous,” but will destabilize volatile regions of the world and undermine America’s credibility everywhere. Crises that were contained could show up on our doorstep.

As your constituent and someone who believes that humanity should come before ideology, I urge you to call on Secretary of State Marco Rubio to reinstate global foreign assistance as soon as possible. These funds were already appropriated by Congress. As a taxpayer and a voter, I know that they must be spent as intended.
