Act now to stop inhumane deportations from the Dominican Republic to Haiti

A human rights crisis is unfolding in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican government is violating its own laws, detaining and deporting migrants and others with perceived ties to Haiti. Authorities are withholding water from detainees, raiding homes without warrants, robbing detainees and deporting people who were legally allowed to be in the Dominican Republic.

Please contact leaders in Congress and urge them to pressure the Dominican government to halt these inhumane deportations.

I write to you as someone who is profoundly concerned about human rights around the world. While I am determined to fight against harmful U.S. policies during the next administration, I also want to urge you to use your global influence regarding a devastating situation in the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican government is inhumanely deporting or detaining tens of thousands of people: not just Haitian migrants despite their immigration status, but also Dominicans of Haitian descent and Black Dominicans, regardless of their ties to Haiti. Authorities are withholding water from detainees, raiding homes without warrants, robbing detainees and detaining people who were legally allowed to be in the Dominican Republic. Organizations and their staff members who are working to help those affected are also being physically attacked by far-right ultra-nationalists.

This is a violation of international law, and the values that I hold dear, and I cannot remain silent in the face of this abuse.

While President Biden is still in office, I ask you to use your diplomatic ties to urge the Dominican government to:

* Halt all detainment and deportations of migrants and Dominicans of Haitian descent who possess documentation demonstrating their legal status in the Dominican Republic.

* Ensure that the protected groups outlined in the Dominican migration protocols (including minor children, pregnant and lactating women, women with dependent children and the elderly) are protected from detainment and deportation.

* Take measures to stop abuses being committed by authorities in the process of deportation as well as any operations that violate Dominican deportation protocols and international human rights law.

* Standardize the migration status of Haitian workers and their families so that they can continue to contribute to the Dominican economy in ways that benefit Dominican society and reduce their vulnerability to abuse by Dominican authorities and employers.

* Prosecute people and organizations that incite violence and hate and unlawfully intimidate and harass individuals, as well as organizations working to defend human rights in the Dominican Republic.
